It is imperative, when using essential and non-essential technology to run your business, that you make sure your Data and Hard-drives are constantly backed-up. To illustrate, let me tell you a simple story:
A friend of mine was sitting at his computer last November, when a massive bang was heard on the street outside. It was so powerful that it actually shook the building. Some of his fellow employees thought that a bomb had exploded. Fortunately, the explosion had been caused by a lorry backing into an electric power cable on the street outside. No one was injured in the accident, and life got back to normal within 4 hours of it happening, but the electric was shut down on the street for 24 hours.
A few months prior to this, my friends company had already made contingency plans for such an event, bringing in laptops where appropriate, and connecting all the other computers to a backup power supply, which made sure none of the data was lost. They had also introduced daily back-ups for all their servers, that also ensured safe storage of any information. My friends company was the only fully-functioning business that day, because it had made some simple changes to its Information Technology System that ensured almost no disturbance to the day-to-day running of the business.
I have heard many horror stories from small, medium and even large companies that should know better. A massive electric fault is the last thing on a persons mind when they enter the office, but such events happen all the time, and they can have a really devastating effect on companies that rely on safe and secure IT infrastructure to drive their business.
Information Technology tragedies happen more frequently to small and medium companies. They fail to realize the consequences of overlooking the important tasks of server backups and serious anti-virus protection. Then one day, something unexpected happens and they lose their data.
All of a sudden they may be unable to pay wages, send important information and function at any basic level without the use of the technology they took for granted. It happens all the time. Make sure it doesn’t happen to you.
